It was during my doctoral studies at Westminster Theological Seminary, that I realised that catechisms were a great way of doing discipleship. However, there needed to be catechisms specifically designed for the urban context.
We have a range of discipleship materials that start with the Urban Catechism part 1, and progress to parts 2 & 3, and finally ‘Image Bearers’.
Urban Catechism part 1 ‘Worldview’ Urban Catechism part 2 ‘Saviour’ Urban Catechism part 3 ‘Lord’ Image BearersTo take someone through part 1 of the catechism, you need 2 copies of the catechism (which are A5 sized booklets), and a teacher’s guide (an A4 sized booklet). These can be ordered online via our Order page.
We have provided a preview of the materials for the first 6 questions of the catechism online, so that you can see if this is a resource you’d like to use.

We’ve recently been experimenting with taking people through a select number of questions first (the shorter version), and then later going over the questions missed out (the longer version).

Once you have completed part 1, we recommend part two, which gives an in-depth look at salvation, through what’s called ‘the order of salvation’. This helps us to be gospel-centred, and learn to apply biblical truths to our lives.
To take someone through part 2 of the catechism, you just need 2 copies of the catechism (which are A5 sized booklets). There is no teacher’s guide for part 2. These can be ordered online via our Order page.

After going through part 2, we recommend this catechism that takes us through the Ten Commandments. For each commandment, we look at the wrong we are to avoid, and the good to do, and finally how that commandment points to Christ. It’s a great way of teaching Christian ethics, in a gospel centred way.
To take someone through part 3 of the catechism, you just need 2 copies of the catechism (which are A5 sized booklets). There is no teacher’s guide for part 2. These can be ordered online via our Order page.

This course could be done at any stage in a believer’s life, but for new believers we would recommend doing it after catechisms parts 1-3. Image Bearers examines what it means to made in God’s Image. The 11 videos each introduce a topic, that corresponds to a section in the workbook. You can use the workbook either individually or as a group, to diagnose how you are reflecting God’s image, and find gospel truths to meditate on that will bring change on the inside, helping us better reflect God on the outside.
You can order Image Bearers workbooks via our Order page.
